peninsula box office hit in korea

Thriller film 'Train to Busan's' sequel 'Peninsula' is at the top spot of the box office in Korea selling over $15M on its first week.

Korean action thriller Peninsula, the sequel to 2016 hit action thriller Train to Busan, has hit the top spot of Korean box office after selling over two million tickets amounting to $15.12 million (PhP745.5 million) since it's premiere on July 15.

Despite the ongoing pandemic, Peninsula set a record for being the best-selling movie for its opening day this year in South Korea with over 353,010 tickets sold on it's premiere day.

Peninsula reigned in the weekly Korean box office from July 17 to 19, with over 1.22 million tickets sold, grossing $9.27 million.

Train to Busan is also a chart-topper, with a worldwide gross of $98.5 million film.

It premiered in the Midnight Screenings section of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival on May 13, 2016.

Meanwhile, Peninsula has also been selected to be shown at the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Peninsula is the first blockbuster film in months to premiere worldwide.

Kang Dong-won told Naver News, “I'm also curious [how things will go], since it's basically the first big film to premiere worldwide since COVID-19.

"There are inevitably some regretful aspects, but given the circumstances, we have to do what needs to be done. There's nothing else we can do.”

Peninsula takes place four years after Train to Busan's story took place and centers around a group of people who were left behind to survive in a ruinous land.

The movie stars Kang Dong-won, Lee Jung-hyun, Kwon Hae-hyo, Kim Min-jae, Goo Kyo-hwan, Kim Do-yoon, Lee Re, and Lee Ye-won.
