Eugene Domingo is a theater actor first and a comedian second. But most people recognize her as the funny girl in so many shows and films that they barely remember the title. What they never forget, though, is her consistently exemplary performance. Text by KC M. Abalos. With interview by Loretta Ramirez. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio.
It seems that she was born to become a thespian. From starring in school plays at the University of the Philippines to playing extras in TV or in films, Eugene Domingo has painstakingly built a reputation of quality acting no matter how big or small the part. It never really made a difference since her skills always stood out among a cast of even the biggest stars. Has she always wanted to act?
“Siguro, ‘di madali ang trabaho namin. Bakit mo titiisin? Titiisin mo ba ‘yan?” she says and pointed to the make-up artist who was busy glamming her up. “Nagmamake-up, ginaganyan ‘yung ulo mo!”

That comment made the entire room laugh when we caught her preparing on the set of
Kim Samsoon. Even behind the cam, she incites laughs because of energy, wit, and sheer charisma. We asked her if it is always this fun behind the scenes on the show.
She answers, “Happy kami. Masaya dito! ‘Di kami nauubusan ng pagkain. Basta happy kami na maganda ‘yung rating.”
Beyond Laughs
In
Kim Samsoon, she's the cool and level-headed chef Dina who has a soft spot for the tandem of Kim and Cyrus. Many people are against the two's unusual budding romance, so chef Dina’s loving support is definitely a blessing. In her role, Eugene is her usual brilliant self--flawlessly delivering lines or jokes, while maintaining a straight faced expression.
The veteran actress knows that she has been blessed with many projects and she embraces all the challenges with her usual optimism, knowing that all her efforts since her difficult start in the biz is paying off.
“I think harvest time na sa lahat ng tina-trabaho ko ngayon, mula sa pag-eextra, sa lahat ng pagpupuyat. Sa lahat ng pinakisamahan mo, dadating pala ‘yung point na ikaw ‘yung may options--ang sarap,” she states with a more somber tone.
Though she misses theater, which she admits is her first love, she is grateful for the opportunities destiny is throwing her way.
“Kung ano man ang ginagawa ko ngayon, gusto ko iyun. Nage-endorse--imagine!” she says, delivering the line from her milk commercial without batting an eyelash. “Nagba-balanse ng TV commercial, nag-iindie, ok sa akin ‘yun. Sa awa ng Diyos, nabibigyan ako ng chance na magawa lahat iyun.”
She is an inspiration to the young actors in the show who have just been exposed to comedic acting. This is her advice: “Constantly, kailangan natututo ka, exposed ka. ‘Di ‘yung ito lang ang kaya kong gawin. Dito ako napansin, dito na lang ako, kailangan sige pa! Grow, grow, grow!”
These pearls of wisdom came from Eugene’s years of experience and innate smarts. More than a comedienne, she is a real thespian.
