Mayor Vico Sotto didn't back down from answering some fan questions earlier today, April 30, in Monster RX 93.1's All Out with Rico Robles and Karla Aguas.
In the hour-long interview, the incumbent Pasig City mayor was asked everything and anything under the sun -- from pineapples on pizza to his favorite ulam.
Karla and Rico then read a fan question asking Vico what advice would he give his 20-year-old self.
To which he answered firmly, “I'd probably tell myself to study a bit harder and to get more experience with extra-curricular activities.”
He explained, “Kasi 'di ako masyadong active nun e. So, I felt like after college, naghahabol ako ng experience. Pero okay naman ako ngayon.
“But, I probably would have done a lot better if I had that experience in college. Join maybe, or be a bit more active sa orgs and probably take acads a little bit more seriously kasi 'di ako masyadong nag-aral nung college.”
It can be recalled that Vico studied Political Science at the Ateneo de Manila University and graduated in 2011. He then further pursued a master's degree in the same institution where he graduated in 2018.
A year later, he ran for office in Pasig City and later won the 2019 local government elections.
The two DJs then pressed on with the question and asked what tips he could give to the youth who'd want to follow his path in politics.
He sternly replied, “Well, whenever I talk in schools, especially in college or high schools, that if you want to be a leader, you have to be prepared.
“Ito masyado nang serious pero the saddest thing I've seen in government is when people with good hearts enter a leadership position and they end up doing the wrong thing kasi… 'yung tipikal na nakain ng sistema kasi they weren't prepared.
“Kumbaga, we need to ready and prepare ourselves tediously before entering into whatever position you want to get.”
He added, “So,my number one tip is to study. As boring as it sounds, you have to study the process para hindi ka naloloko.
“Second, have a very good support system. That means, finding the people who are like-minded and people with integrity.
“That's the first thing I did. When I won mayor, I knew I had to find people I could trust. Find people that I knew who had integrity and also who are competent.
"Madaling maghanap ng one or the other kasi it's easy to find competent people and it's easy to find people who have integrity. But to find people who are both, 'yan ang mahirap hanapin.”
Love and other life lessons
The other DJs then quickly asked Vico if he's already entertained the idea of having a love life.
“Love? What is love?” asked Vico.
“'Love is patient, love is kind.' Wala akong alam sa love at wala munang love life,” he jokingly added.
During the interview, he also commended his parents, most especially Coney Reyes, for raising him well and giving him the foundation he needed to run his administration.
He said, “I think from my work ethic to just having integrity, it comes from my parents -- from both of them.
“Well, of course, it was my mom who really raised me because I grew up with my mom. But my dad was there as well.
“As you know, my mom is very religious. She is God-fearing, God-loving, and that's what she really imparted to me at a young age. My dad also.
“So, how I work and I think that really comes from them.
And of course the most important question of the entire program: Does Mayor Vico Sotto prefer pineapples on pizza?
“I eat it but it doesn't necessarily mean I like it,” he answered.
