Now that Atom Araullo has made a big career move and returned to his home network, it is only timely that he has shared his thoughts on pursuing a practical job versus a dream job.
Atom gave a career advice via Bianca Gonzales’ Facebook vlog ‘Paano Ba ‘To?!’ The Kapuso broadcast journalist revealed how he began his career via the now defunct TV show 5 and Up, and how he took chances in the industry despite being a Physics graduate.
He related, “Parang ang lakas lang ng loob ko na, ‘Basta ito ang gusto kong gawin.’ I just wanted to try it out. I was taking a break from physics kasi napagod ako. May nagtanong sa akin, ‘Gusto mong i-try maging researcher sa isang documentary program?’ Sabi ko, ‘Why not?’ Then eventually they asked me if I wanted to become a reporter. I said, ‘Sure, why not?’”
“I think it’s not a question of knowing right away if your job is your dream job, but finding your passion in the job that you have,” he stressed.
Atom also acknowledged the reality that not everyone has the resources to easily pursue what they want for their career.
He said, “Alam mo, maraming circumstances sa mga tao, and I think it’s a little bit out of touch when people say na, ‘You only live once, go for your dream job’ kasi a lot of us have practical considerations. Breadwinner, kailangan nang kumita kasi wala silang ganung klaseng kakayahan not to be working for a month, even a year.”
He, however, emphasized that choosing practicality over passion is not a dead end.
Atom explained, “I think that if you have a good job that you see reasonable growth in, then puwede kang maging passionate sa trabahong ‘yun. Give yourself some sort of plan, parang ‘I want to do this in a year. In five years, this is what I see myself doing, and so on.’ Now, if what you’re really, really passionate about is not in your job, you can make it so that your job supports your passion. You don’t have to choose. May free time ka naman eh.
“Don’t think that you are not leading the life that you envisioned for yourself just because you have to work hard at the job that you have, hindi mo dream job. If you can work on both then baka umabot ‘yung isang araw na it makes sense. It’s still going to be a risk. ‘Ok, if it doesn’t work, ito ‘yung puwede kong gawin.’ Hindi lang siya ‘yung parang blind leap into the unknown,” he continued.
