The Witcher actor Henry Cavill in Manila

Henry Cavill, lead star of Netflix's big-budget fantasy series The Witcher, opened up about doing his own stunts and revealing the true power of an iconic character

Sporting a gravelly growl, twin swords and a white wig, British actor Henry Cavill leads Netflix's fantasy epic The Witcher as monster hunter Geralt of Rivia.

The new series, adapted from Andrzej Spakowski's novel of the same name, is a big-budget swing by the streamer aiming to fill the adult fantasy void left by Game of Thrones.

Having made a name for himself in blockbuster films like Superman, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and a CIA assassin in the Tom Cruise classic Mission mpossible, Cavill is returning to the small screen as the titular magic-wielding-sword-for hire.

During his press conference in #TheWitcherInManila, Cavill sat down with actor Matteo Guidicelli to discuss performing his own stunts, most especially wielding two swords in the series.

“The sword wasn't heavy... yes, to a degree,” Henry stated.

“I mean a perfectly balanced sword is heavy to a point but not too heavy.

“But the trick to fighting on set with a sword, with a real weight sword, is that you're not swinging through something. You're not actually trying to hit someone and so stopping the sword is the trickiest bit.”

With that being said, he also confessed hitting quite a few extras along the way. But at the end of the day, it was all part of the job.

“In the ideal world, you don't want to make contact with anybody's hands or anything but with more technical fights then it's pretty much part of the course.”

In the series, Henry plays the protagonist Geralt of Rivia a trained superhuman warrior hunting down monsters for money.

But for the actor, there's something more to Geralt than meets the eye.

“Well, aside from being incredibly fast, strong, great endurance, and long life better than your average human, he can also cast basic spells.

"This is all part of the process which they gain from chemical trials as boys and various amounts of training. But these spells are not as strong as what the sorcerers or sorcerers cast but when combined with their physical prowess it can be incredibly deadly.

“But aside from all of that, Geralt's secret power is his capacity to love and belief in the world. What he presents in the world is not necessarily on the inside,” he concluded.
