The controversial movie ‘Oro’ directed by Alvin Yapan lost one of its prized awards in the recently concluded awards nights of the Metro Manila Film Festival held last December 29.
‘Oro’ was criticized by netizens and animal rights advocates after news broke out that it showed a dog being brutally killed in the movie.
Film Development Council of the Philippines chairman Liza Diño-Esguerra announced on Facebook that the Fernando Poe Jr. Memorial award given to 'Oro' will be rescinded after consulting with the family of the late movie legend.
Liza said, “Upon consultation with the family of the late Fernando Poe Jr., the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Executive Committee announces the withdrawal of the Fernando Poe Jr. Memorial Award recently granted to the film "ORO". Without making any judgement on the artistic merit of the film or cinematic depiction, the MMFF finds the present controversy on the alleged killing of a dog in the course of the filming of the movie effectively casts a doubt on the movie's ability to exemplify the human and cultural values espoused by the late Fernando Poe Jr.”
'Oro' also took home the award for Best Ensemble cast and actress Irma Adlawan won the recognition of Best Actress in a Leading Role.
In the live-interview of Liza on Unang Hirit yesterday, January 3, she admitted that she was horrified, when she watched the dog slaughter scene in ‘Oro.’
“Ako po ‘yung umiyak actually. After nung film, I went out, I was bawling, I was talagang to the point na talagang ‘No! this is unacceptable!’”
“Ako mismo I’m an animal advocate. I have dogs,”
She added that she called the production team behind the movie to ask, if a real dog was killed while shooting the film. And the production team assured her that it was only prosthetics and the animal scene in the movie was a goat.
