Four out of the six crowned Miss Philippines are multiracial, Miss Universe Philippines Rachel Peters is half-British, Miss Intercontinental Philippines Katarina Rodriguez is half-American, Miss Supranational Philippines Chanel Olive Thomas is half-Australian, and Miss Grand International Elizabeth Clenci is half-Romanian.
 
While the Binibining Pilipinas 2017 coronation night was on-going, TV host and eventologist Tim Yap pointed out that some of the contestants don’t look they came from their respective provinces because of their “mestiza” features. He has since deleted his comment and has apologized for it.
 
Rachel came to Tim’s defense, “I don’t think he meant it in any mean sort of way. The Philippines [are] a mixture of different cultures, and I think it’s wonderful.”
 
Meanwhile, Chanel feels grateful to experience both countries where her parents are from, “I grew up in Australia, but I just had my three-year anniversary living here which I’m absolutely proud of.”
 
Although she is half Australian, the model-turned-beauty queen said she is Pinoy by heart, “I know I am Filipino, [and] I don’t have to prove [that] to anyone. I guess if you’re just being yourself and being who you are, people will just see that through me.”
 
Miss International Philippines 2017 Mariel de Leon and Miss Globe Philippines 2017 Nelda Ibe also graced the morning news program News to Go yesterday (May 10).
