“You’re nothing, but a second rate trying hard copycat.”
These are the powerful words Cherie Gil delivered as Laviña Arguelles in the 1985 film Bituing Walang Ningning. While she nor anyone in the movie production ever expected this line will become iconic, the veteran actress believes it was something that resonated with many women.
Cherie shared her thoughts about the famous line on Tonight With Arnold Clavio, “Alam mo hindi ko rin alam kasi wala sa amin ang nag-expect na makarating sa ganoong klaseng iconic na tatak na pati ‘yung mga hindi pa napanganak noong panahon na ‘yun eh alam.”
Nonetheless, the actress opined the line turning iconic had something to do with the '80s movement towards women empowerment.
“‘Yung paggawa ng pelikula noong araw kasi iba eh, ‘di ba. May pagka-campy ‘yung mga linya, may mabibigat na Tagalog, and the story goes na hindi dahil sa may kontrabida’t may bida. May pinaglalaban ‘yung dalawang babae na prinsipyo at ‘yung kanilang gusto sa buhay, na walang mali. ‘Yung isa love, ‘yung isa career. Hindi ‘yung basta-bastang nag-agawan ng asawa, whatever, walang ganun. The most important was they were empowered by their desires in life. Marami nag-identify doon at saka siguro maganda talaga ‘yung linya eh,” she said.
