For one, she is delighted to see his son showcase his talents through show business. She enumerated a few of the many milestones Derrick has reached onscreen.

“First, when he became an actor… I’m now seeing that he’s developing his acting. Second, when he first sang in Party Pilipinas because (people) recognized that he could sing classical songs, and then he was given a break to also sing,” she said.

Outside show business, meanwhile, she has more praises for him. “He’s intelligent. Nakikita ko (talaga) 'yun. Yung brain niya, maraming napi-pick up, so maraming laman ang utak niya,” she shared.

More than his brilliance, Tina is more proud of the goodness of her son’s heart. “He’s a very loving person, he is not selfish. I really love [those things] about him. He can [also] become really sweet sa akin at sa mga kapatid niya… I hope that when he grows up, he will keep those traits,” she added.

Conversely, Derrick is proud of her mom who has raised him and his siblings by herself. “Single mom siya eh. She doesn’t have a partner so I’m proud sa pag-raise niya sa aming tatlo. I know it’s really hard for a single mom to do that, pero nagawa niya,” he said.

The young actor also learns so much from his mom every day. According to him, she teaches them how to be better individuals, both by word and example. One of the lessons he has learned from her, that he considers essential to his career, is humility.

“I learned from her to always keep your feet on the ground. Huwag yumabang kahit ano pa man ang ma-achieve mo, Huwag lalaki ulo,” he shared.

As a mom, and also someone who was immersed in the showbiz industry, Tina wants Derrick to be mindful of everything he does. She constantly remind him to to prioritize kindness.

“I pray that he will be careful of his actions and his words because sometimes one may think that he’s just playing around and there are people who could misinterpret it. Ayaw kong meron siyang masagasaan. I don’t want him to have enemies,” she said.

This Mother’s Day, aside from material things, Derrick wants to make his mom feel special by treating her like a queen, like he tries to do every day. “Bibigyan ko siya ng masibagong palakpakan at kiss,” he shared, smiling.
