Education is one of the fundamental parts of a child's development, so parents take extra time and effort to decide such a part of their children's lives.
Some choose the traditional practice of participating in the academe; while some parents, like Filipina actress Jan Marini, see more potential in homeschooling.
During her appearance on GTV's cooking talk show Lutong Bahay with her husband Gerard Pizarras, Jan revealed to Mikee Quintos and Chef Ylyt that she has been homeschooling their children, Rian and Rain.
“Homeschooling mom ako for t10 years kaya ako nagpahinga sa teleserye,” said Jan.
(I am a homeschooling mom for ten years, that's why I took a break from television series.)
According to Jan, her decision to homeschool her children was driven by her passion for teaching.
“Una, gusto kong maging teacher noong bata ako. So naging artista-singer na ako, but I still had that desire na parang gusto kong magturo ng bata, so nakita ko 'yung homeschooling,” Jan told Mikee and Chef Ylyt.
(I wanted to be a teacher when I was a kid. So I became an actress and singer, but I still had that desire to teach children, and then I learned about homeschooling.)

Jan said she thoroughly researched the homeschooling culture and shared that they still had to pay for a homeschool program. Ultimately, her children decided to take up the U.S. curricula.
“I had to teach them American history. E, hindi ko naman 'yun natutuhan in my college years, so I had to [study them as well],” the actress shared.

But despite studying the American curricula, Jan taught her children Filipino history to keep in touch with their roots.
Meanwhile, her husband Gerard is assigned to teach their children Math and Science.
Jan is currently in her tenth year of teaching and only has a year left. In terms of schedule, Jan customized the original 12-month calendar and trimmed it down to less time. She aims to finish the remaining school year by February 2025.
When it comes to the grading system, Gerard revealed that her wife is very strict on the subject and does not easily give high scores.
Jan explained, “Ayokong mag-mold ng perfect kid. 'Yung daughter ko, she almost failed Science [and] iniyakan niya 'yun sa akin. Sabi ko, 'Then, you have to master [the subject]. You give me an entire quarter of work again.' So ganoon, medyo terror teacher, but you know, she did well in college so I think I did the right thing.”
