Hook, Line, & Sinker band shares why heartaches inspire more songwriting
Hook, Line, & Sinker are composed of four young musicians belonging to different bands who came from different backgrounds and joined together to form a new band.
This week, GMA Playlist brings you four young musicians belonging to different bands who came from different backgrounds and joined together to form a new band called Hook, Line & Sinker. The band's current roster is made up of AJ Soliman, Edsel De Guzman, Nathan Abella, and David Montalban.
The group was formed when AJ and Edsel became friends and had the idea of forming a band.
Edsel "Nung nag-decide kaming bumuo ng banda nakilala namin si Nathan and naimpluwensyahan nila ako sa music genre nila.
"Nagpa-audition kami for a drummer and blessed kami kasi isa si David sa mga nag-audition.
Edsel recalled how they came up with their band name and surprisingly it's got nothing to do with fishing. "Yung Hook, Line, & Sinker kasi isa siya sa mga tracks from How I Met Your Mother and nagustuhan ko siya. So 'nung naghahanap kami ng name para sa band, 'yun 'yung suggestion ko, he said.
Hook, Line, & Sinker's songs may have a soft pop feel but the lyrics speak very openly about heartache and loss.
"Love Hurts" and "6 a.m." are examples of their band's overall musical genre.
AJ said, 'Yung mga songs namin all about past experiences. I wrote "6 a.m. last year. It's about chasing the person that you love. Parang tina-try mong habulin kahit na parang lumalayo, basically 'yun ang theme nung song."
Nathan added how heartbreak and painful memories make way for song inspiration, "I base it off my personal experiences. 'Kapag sawi or badtrip. Usually kapag negative doon may pinagkukunan kasi nandoon 'yung strong emotions.
'Yung "Nothing to Do With You" mas nauna 'yung music kaysa lyrics and nag-try lang ako na gawan ng story.
"As songwriters, we are also storytellers. And it can be based on personal experiences. It can be based on others or fiction lang talaga" said Nathan.
Edsel shared his inspiration for "6 a.m., "Yung title pa lang it speaks for itself. Very direct naman kami kapag nagsusulat ng songs.
"Love Hurts" is about 'yung feeling ng pagod sa isang relationship, na iniisip mo kung worth it pa ba.
Even drummer David pitches in creating the band's songs through melodies and lyrics. "Sa akin automatic 'yung melodies but the words take a while talaga kasi ayaw."
