“Mahirap, masakit mapalayo sa mga anak kasi bilang isang nanay, gusto natin na tayo ang nag-aalaga sa mga anak natin.”
These were the heartfelt words of Liezl Joy Trabucon Atido, a Global Pinoy working in Jordan. Like millions of Filipino mothers working abroad, Liezl endures the pain of being away from her child so she can provide her child a better future.
Before working overseas, Liezl worked as a household helper in the Philippines. Inspired by neighbors whose lives improved after becoming OFWs, she decided to take the same path. She first worked in Saudi Arabia before eventually moving to Jordan.
“Dahil sa kahirapan ng buhay, gusto kong mabigyan ng magandang buhay ang pamilya ko. ‘Yung bahay namin ay laging tumutulo kapag darating ang ulan, so wala kaming masisilungan.”
But the decision to work abroad came with a painful sacrifice—not being physically present to witness her two-year-old child grow up.
“Hindi pa niya maintindihan ang nangyayari. Wala naman siyang alam kung kailan ka babalik, kung gaano ka katagal, kung pagkagising niya sa kinabukasan, makikita ka niya. Lahat ng ganap sa buhay niya, hindi mo nakikita. Hindi mo siya nasusubaybayan. Hindi mo siya natuturuan nang maayos, matutukan kasi malayo siya sa iyo. Walang inang gustong lumayo sa mga anak.”
Despite the distance, Liezl found comfort in having an employer who treated her like family.
“Kahit off cam po, very close po talaga siya. Kumbaga family-oriented talaga ang amo ko kaya kahit na ibang lahi ako, kahit katulong ako, pinaparamdam po nila pati mga anak niya na ‘di ka iba sa kanila.”
She also brushed aside comments from people who believe their closeness is just for the cameras.
“Baka content lang daw, very close talaga ang amo namin sa amin. Kaya tinatawag ko siyang nanay, kasi nanay naman talaga siya. Kahit ‘di ko siya tunay na nanay, pinaparamdam niya sa amin ang tunay na pagmahahal ng isang nanay.”
For her employer, Farah Abdulwahab, Filipino workers are more than just employees.
“Hi to all the Filipinos everywhere in the world. I want to say I love you all and I will support you all. Since I have Filipinos as workers, I don’t consider them as workers. I consider them not only as a family but also as a mother, as a sister. They supported me in all kinds of ways. When I am happy, when I am sad. I thank them.”
While Liezl remains grateful for the opportunity that allows her to support her family, she admits that, as a mother, she only has one fervent wish.
“Kahit pinalad ako sa mga amo ko, wala akong ibang hiling kung hindi sana dumating iyong time na hindi na kailangan pang lumayo sa anak o sa pamilya. Pero dahil tayo bilang isang nanay, wala rin tayong ibang hangad kundi mapabuti ang kalagayan nila, mapaaral sila nang maayos, kaya huwag nating kalimutan kung bakit tayo nagsasakripisyo sa ibang bansa, kung bakit napapalayo tayo sa kanila.”
