GMA Kapuso Foundation, Inc. (GMAKF) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for GMAKF’s first bridge construction project in Camarines Sur.

The project, “Kapuso Tulay para sa Kaunlaran”, which will replace the typhoon-damaged hanging bridges in Buhi, Camarines Sur, providing a safe passageway for the children, to get to the local school and for resident to have easier access to the highway going to Iriga City. The DPWH has committed to assisting GMAKF in ensuring the stability and safety of the bridges that will be constructed.

Present during the MOU signing held last August 10 at the GMA Network Center were GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon, DPWH Secretary Mark Villar, GMAKF Executive Vice President and COO Rikki Escudero-Catibog, DPWH Undersecretary for Legal and Priority Projects Atty. Karen Olivia Jimeno, and GMAKF Board of Trustees Member Atty. Anna Teresa M. Gozon.

Escudero-Catibog shared that the project was the idea of GMAKF’s Founder and Ambassador Mel C. Tiangco, who always dreamed of building bridges in poor communities.

“When Tita Mel and I saw the footage of small children doing a tight wire act just to get to school, we knew we had to move and raise funds for the construction of the bridge. We are deeply grateful to the DPWH for joining hands with us and helping make our first ever steel hanging bridge project a solid reality,” said Escudero-Catibog.

Gozon, moreover, believes that this cooperation with the DPWH will truly help local children in pursuing their studies. “Malaki ang maitutulong ng DPWH upang masigurong maayos ang pagkakagawa at tama ang gagamiting materyales para sa unang tulay ng Kapuso Foundation,” Atty. Gozon said.

On the other hand, DPWH Secretary Mark Villar expressed gratitude on behalf of the Department.  “Nagpapasalamat po ako sa GMA dahil malaking bagay talaga ang nagiging tulong ng private sector sa mga pangangailangan ng ating mga kababayan,” Villar said.

GMAKF intends to complete the project in October.
