GMA Kapuso Foundation opens first school rebuilt in Marawi City

GMA Kapuso Foundation (GMAKF) together with its multi-sectoral partners and donors successfully inaugurated the first school building that was rebuilt in Marawi City last October 29, a year after its liberation by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) from terrorists.

GMAKF’s ‘Rebuild Marawi Project’ constructed a new school building with a total of 4 Kapuso classrooms and 8 restrooms at Camp Bagong Amai Pakpak Elementary School in Barangay Biaba Damag, Marawi City, Lanao del Sur for almost 300 students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.

The momentous inauguration was headed by GMAKF EVP and COO Rikki Escudero-Catibog together with key multi-sectoral partners from the AFP’s Western Mindanao Command, the 54th Engineering Brigade, Task Force Bangon Marawi, Joint Task Force Ranao, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) National and Region X, the local government of Marawi City, Department of Education (DepEd) Marawi City Schools Division with the support of the Lanao del Sur Police Provincial Office and the Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur.

The construction was made possible through the monetary donation of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII), Princess Dato Sri Dr. Becky Leogardo, Wilcon Depot Inc., and ICCT Colleges Foundation Inc. as well as material donations of Hanabishi Philippines, Mariwasa Siam Ceramics, NKD International Trading Corporation, Hocheng Philippines Corporation (HCG brand), and Davies Paints Philippines.

“We are more than grateful to our donors, partners and volunteers for their collective efforts in making this dream a reality and for believing in GMA Kapuso Foundation’s vision to help this beautiful city start afresh through the rebuilding of schools for the children,” Escudero-Catibog praised.

GMAKF used construction materials resilient to bullets, fire, typhoon, and termites to ensure the sturdiness and durability of each classroom. Separate male and female toilets were provided per classroom out of respect for Muslim customs and tradition.

GMAKF also turned over a new stage donated by Eat Bulaga, Alden Richards and Republic Cement. A Kapuso Lingap hand washing facility was also built courtesy of Manila Water Foundation while books and shelves for the school library were  given by Children of Mindanao. Noche Buena packs were also distributed to all students as part of GMAKF’s ‘Give-A-Gift’ project.

GMAKF is currently rebuilding and rehabilitating a second school with 6 classrooms and 12 comfort rooms at Pendolonan Elementary School. To donate, visit www.gmanetwork.com/kapusofoundation/donate.
