The grant was signed by the Japanese Ambassador Koji Haneda and Kapuso Foundation Executive Vice President Rikki O. Escudero-Catibog on Friday, March 22.

Four other local government units were also present to accept a grant from the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects in the Philippines (GGP).

GGP is known as an effort started by the Japanese government to help reduce poverty and help communities.

In an interview with Ambassador Haneda, he discussed why they chose to support Kapuso Foundation.

He said, “We thought that the children’s education is the key to the future, the development of this country, and GMA’s project, we thought that would be a very good vehicle to invest in the future.”

To further explain the grant for Kapuso Foundation, Ambassador Hanedo discoursed their rehabilitation and rebuilding purpose for Marawi City.

“The Philippines is a very important friend of Japan and we want to support the Philippine government's efforts to rebuild and rehabilitate the city of Marawi.

“We believe that the reconstruction and the redevelopment of Marawi will lead to peace and stability of Mindanao, of course, which in turn will contribute to ensuring the peace and stability of Asia Pacific Region.

“So, we are very glad to be of help to rehabilitate Marawi City.”

The school that Kapuso Foundation will rehabilitate is the Datu Saber Elementary School, which was damaged due to the 2017 siege in Marawi.

According to the grant, this will be part of the Japan-Bangsamoro Initiatives for Reconstruction and Development or J-BIRD.

Kapuso Foundation’s executive Excudero-Catibog disclosed that the school will be made with the help of the United Architects of the Philippines.

The design will be donated to the Department of Education’s Marawi City schools’ division.
