San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb vows Lady Stags will fight for ‘pride and honor’ in final game

San Sebastian College-Recoletos head coach Roger Gorayeb said the Lady Stags will continue to fight for honor and pride despite a lackluster start to their campaign in the NCAA Season 98 women’s volleyball tournament.

San Sebastian, a Final Four contender last season, began the season with sixth straight losses before finally barging to the win column via a five-set victory over still winless Jose Rizal University last weekend.

Though they followed it with a sweep over Emilio Aguinaldo College on Tuesday to cop back-to-back wins, it was too little, too late for the Lady Stags as they were already eliminated from playoff contention.

Still, Gorayeb remained positive about the team's outlook, saying they will make sure to end the Season 98 on a winning note as they face San Beda University on Saturday for their last assignment.

“Medyo ngayon pa lang sila nagiinit kaya lang wala na akong magagawa e. We’re just fighting for our pride and honor. Had they done this before, maganda sana,” said Gorayeb.

“Lalaro kami. We’re very much confident. Kahit sila, alam nilang bumabalik na ‘yung laro nila. Kaya lang, too late the hero. But we want to end this year in a winning fashion.”

("It's only now that they're heating up but there's not much we can do at this point. We're just fighting for our pride and honor. Had they done this earlier, we might've done something good... We'll play. We're very much confident. Even the players, they know their game is coming back. It's too late the hero. But we want to end this year in winning fashion.")

One of the bright spots that San Sebastian can lean on in the future is Tina Marasigan.

The sophomore opposite hitter broke out in the third set to pour in 20 points, steering her squad to a breezy win.

“Si Tina kaya niya ‘yung ganyang laro, kaya lang mahina ‘yung loob,” Gorayeb shared. “Napansin niyo ‘yung second set ang dami niyang errors pero sabi ko nga sa kanya, wala namang pumipigil sa’yo, sarili mo lang.”

("Tina is capable of playing that way, but she needs to believe in herself... If you notice, she had a lot of errors in the second set but I told her, there's no one stopping you but yourself.")
