Ateneo awards Gawad Kritika Kultura to Celerio, holds confab on translation

Top translation practitioners and scholars from the Philippines, Australia, and the US will gather for the first Kritika Kultura International Conference (KKIC) on August 31, 2012 at the Ricardo and Dr. Rosita Leong Hall, Ateneo de Manila University.

 

With the theme "Traveling Texts: Translation and Globalization," the conference aims to address translation and its imperial connections; translation in a cultural context; translation as a form of research; translation in the curriculum and the classroom; and translation as creative practice. These issues are inseparable from the nationwide adoption of the mother tongue based multilingual education paradigm (MLE), as well as the increasing internationalization of higher education worldwide.

 

One conference highlight is the Gawad Kritika Kultura, which posthumously honors National Artist for Music and Literature Levi Celerio for his contributions to Philippine translation, foremost of which are his adaptations (saling-awit) of many songs into Filipino. The award is supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) as part of its Bukambibig: Literary Performance Series.

 

Delivering keynote lectures are Dr. Vicente Rafael from University of Washington at Seattle, and Dr. Harry Aveling from Monash University, Australia. Plenary lecturers include Dr. Benilda S. Santos, former Dean of the School of Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University; Dr. Michael M. Coroza,Associate Professor of the Filipino Department, Ateneo de Manila University; Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera, National Artist for Literature; and Mr. Marne Kilates, former holder of the Henry Lee Irwin Professorial Chair in Creative Writing in Ateneo de Manila University.

 

KKIC is organized by Kritika Kultura (the international e-journal of language, literary and cultural studies of the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University) in collaboration with the Ateneo Institute for Literary Arts and Practices, the School of Humanities Research Committee, and the Office of the Associate Dean for Research and Creative Work (Ateneo de Manila University). The conference is supported by the Commission on Higher Education and the NCCA. Event partners include the Ateneo de Manila University Press, Adarna House, the University of the Philippines Press, and the University of Santo Tomas Publishing House.
