A legacy 'MADE of Gold'

Metrobank Foundation’s art coffee table book publication MADE of Gold
The value of an exemplary work of art borne out of the artist's talent and creativity is always perceived as priceless as pure gold. A legacy of almost three decades of recognizing artistic excellence immortalized into publication can be simply described as - made of gold. As part of the 50th year celebration of Metrobank, Metrobank Foundation Inc. (MBFI) recently launched its first art coffee table book publication which features the winners of the Metrobank Art & Design Excellence entitled, MADE of Gold.

The event was held at the Main Lobby of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. With retired Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban as the guest of honor, together with former president Fidel V. Ramos. MBFI launched three publications, one of which is the MADE of Gold.

For the first time the MADE winning works were exhibited at the walls of the CCP. During the launch, a special exhibit of selected featured artworks was opened at the Pasilyo Vicente Manansala (2/f Hallway Gallery) and at the Pasilyo Carlos Francisco (Little Theater Lobby) of CCP. The exhibit featured 23 selected artworks and 9 sculptures since 1984 - 2011. Artists who participated in the exhibit are: John Paul Antido, Chrisanto Aquino, Andres Barrioquinto, Elmer Borlongan, Leslie de Chavez, Florence Cinco, Marc Vicent Cosico, Melvin Culaba, Teodorico Cumagun III, Jonathan Dangue, Julius Anthony del Castillo, Norman Dreo, Clarence Eduarte, Van Cleef Emnacen, Alfredo Esquillo, Jr., Roberto Feleo, Mark Andy Garcia, Ronald Jeresano, Mark Justiniani, Antonio Leaño, Ferdinand Montemayor, Jan Leeroy New, Lynyrd Arwyn Paras, Samuel Penaso, Alexander Roxas, Reynaldo Samson, Jr., Kelly Sonio, Rex Tatlonghari, Dennis Ticao, Jericho Vamenta, Rolando Ventura and Erline Vicaldo

"To view this collection is to read various and multiple aspects of the Philippine experience, by turns wondrous and wounding, beatific and brutalizing, hellish and healing. These works are like the refractions of shards of light, wrought on canvas, paper, stone, wood and iron, that define the Filipino soul," said Cid Reyes, art critic and book author.

As part of the 50th year celebration of Metrobank, Metrobank Foundation Inc. (MBFI) recently launched its first art coffee table book publication MADE of Gold. The exhibit gave the audience a preview of the actual artworks featured in MADE of Gold. Authored by Mr. Cid Reyes, MADE of Gold chronicles the 28 year history of the ongoing art competition, the Metrobank Art & Design Excellence. As one browse through the gold gilded pages, one may recognize a lot of familiar names of artists in the field of Philippine Visual Art and Design.

It narrates the beginning of the competition in 1984 when Dr. George S.K. Ty established the competition to harness the creativity of the Filipino youth through a productive endeavor amidst an environment of unrest at the time, he launched the first Metrobank Painting Competition.

This competition was a call, a call for the Filipino youth to dream, to hope and to create. He believes that through this competition, young artists will be encouraged to hone their artistic skills to its full potential. Because more than being a patron of the arts, he believes in the significant role that culture and art play in nation building. The book is a vision made tangible, a testament to the legacy of MADE.

MADE of Gold immortalizes the 140 paintings, 12 sculptures, 7 Metrobank Prize for Achievement in Sculpture Awardees, 13 interior designers and 6 architects. As part of the celebration of Metrobank's golden year, we offer a gift of history, of heritage and of legacy - a gift MADE of Gold.
