The GMA-AMA Eleksyon 2016 Campaign Tracker is a joint project of GMA Network and AMA Educational Systems.
The first of its kind in the Philippines, the Campaign Tracker is a data journalism and visualization platform that exhaustively aggregates and sorts various data on the campaign sorties of all presidential and vice presidential candidates in the 2016 Philippine elections.
Users can quickly see the places where each candidate has gone during the campaign period and when; compare their sorty destinations with other candidates'; and discern which areas in the country have been frequently or rarely visited by candidates—or ignored altogether—among other patterns and insights. By doing so, the Campaign Tracker can add context and greater understanding to the reportage on campaign activities and elections in the news media.
This news innovation makes use of algorithm-based software that harvests geotagged content, including photos, from social media. At the same time, AMA personnel comb through media reports and communicate with the candidates' organizations for additional information on their sorties. It makes use of the Storymap data visualization tool developed by Knight Lab based at Northwestern University in Illinois, USA.
