Imelda steals scene in Leyte; hugs Arroyo

Former first lady Imelda Marcos on Wednesday exchanged hugs and kisses with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in devastated Saint Bernard town in Southern Leyte, GMA 7's DZBB reported. Mrs. Arroyo had just wrapped up her ocular inspection of the ongoing rescue efforts in Guinsaugon village when Marcos reportedly ran to the presidential helicopter. The former first lady, a Leyte native, thanked President Arroyo for taking time to visit and for giving attention to the plight of the affected families. Marcos' displays of affection come on the start of the four-day commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the 1986 EDSA revolt which drove her family into exile. She visited the rescue command center to extend her sympathies to the victims of last Friday's landslide which left at least 107 dead and over 1,000 missing. Meanwhile, Mrs. Arroyo told landslide survivors that the government will provide a scholarship fund for the children who survived the tragedy. Her entourage also reportedly handed out P5,000 to the survivors, who were asked to sign acknowledgement documents as proof that they received the money. Director Gen. Arturo Lomibao, National Police chief, also donated P1 million to the Guingsaugon residents in behalf of the country's police force. He said the fund was collected from the donations of various policemen.-GMANEWS.TV
