Comelec ups #HuliWeek hashtag vs candidates campaigning during Holy Week
Hardheaded candidates who insist on campaigning on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday may find themselves mentioned on Twitter, and not in a good way.
Prompted by an initial suggestion from Interaksyon.com, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday asked the public to be vigilant for campaigning and report them to the Comelec Twitter account @Comelec with the hashtag #HuliWeek.
Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said on his Twitter account:
Tulong tulong tayo magbantay sa mga politikong nangangampanya bukas at sa Biernes! Ang Sumbong Mo sa #HuliWeek #SumbongMo na rin sa @comelec — James Jimenez (@jabjimenez) March 27, 2013
Earlier, the Comelec had warned candidates against campaigning on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
Under Republic Act 7166, the campaign period may exclude the day before Election Day, the day of the election itself, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday.
Those found guilty of violating the rule may face one to six years' imprisonment, and disqualification from holding public office, and deprivation of the right to vote.
Comelec Resolution 9385, which lists the calendar of activities for the campaign period, also notes that campaigning on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
On Black Saturday, the campaign period resumes for national candidates, and begins for local candidates. — TJD, GMA News
