Amid resignation calls, Bro. Eli backs PNoy, trends #Noynoyparin on Twitter

The growing clamor versus President Benigno Aquino III's (PNoy's) handling of the Mamasapano clash has taken on another dimension on social media, with another religious faction joining the fray.

Amidst mounting calls for his resignation, the President has gained a new—and unlikely—ally in the form of hard-hitting Christian televangelist Bro. Eliseo Soriano.

Last Friday, the National Transformation Council issued a statement calling for Aquino to step down, with some Catholic bishops including Cebu Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal lending their voice to the call.

Known for his critical stance against the Catholic Church, Soriano questioned the Church's motives for urging the president's resignation:

He then set up a hashtag campaign to urge the public to stand behind the beleaguered Aquino:

The hashtag has since gained traction on Twitter, trending to the fifth spot on the social network's leaderboard for the Philippines as of 7:30 pm Monday, February 16.
