Joseph Gordon-Levitt agrees his character was the 'actual villain' in '500 Days of Summer'

Who was responsible for the unraveling of Tom and Summer's relationship in "500 Days of Summer"?

This has long been a debate among those who watched it, others demonizing Summer for breaking Tom's heart, while others say Tom projected his wants and expectations on Summer.

It looks like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who played Tom in the iconic film, believes that it was the latter.

The actor retweeted a post saying that Summer, played by Zooey Deschanel, was the "movie villain" and Tom was the "actual villain."

"I approve this message," he wrote.

His tweet went viral, with over 360,000 likes.

In a 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly, both Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt said Summer is not the villain people think her to be.

Deschanel pointed out that the film was "100 percent from Tom's point of view."

Gordon-Levitt said that his authoritative voiceover made the audience believe that what Tom says and thinks are true.

"We all think that our perspective is authoritative, and Tom thinks that his perspective is authoritative. But life’s actually a lot more subjective than that," he said.
