Artists memorialize ‘tokhang’ victims on canvas

Members of Pandayan ng Kulturang Pilipino (Panday Pira) are using their talent in art to focus on the lives lost to Oplan Tokhang, the police operations done to accomplish the Duterte administration's directive to combat the alleged drug menace sweeping the country. 

"Panday Pira started with protest art and social realism. Naging highlight ito ng exhibit na ito since the war on drugs is the burning issue in our time. The paintings are symbolical in its ideas and form of protest," said Benhur Bobis, one of the participating artists.

As of January 2017, the Philippine National Police has visited over 7 million houses

under Oplan Tokhang, resulting in nearly 80,000 drug pushers surrendering to authorities, according to PNP data. The anti-illegal drug operations have also resulted in the deaths of 2,548 drug suspects.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The artworks are currently on display at the Hasmin Exhibit Space at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
