How millennials saved 'Ang Larawan'

Loy Arcenas' adaptation of Nick Joaquin and Rolando Tinio's "Ang Larawan" found an unlikely ally in the youth, who producer Girlie Rodis revealed in a press conference on Saturday helped "save" the film.

The generation famous for "killing" industries rallied behind the period musical online after news broke out that the film was being pulled from theaters.

"In the beginning, the fact that theaters were being removed from us also helped...ano, with the millennials -- because, you know, the millennials want to save the world," Rodis said. "They trended us on Twitter. Maganda 'yong nangyari."

Rodis and actor Rachel Alejandro said that they met young fans of the films who told them, "I've seen the movie three times and I'll see it again!"

On a surface level, it doesn't seem like "Ang Larawan" would attract the so-called "selfie" generation, but stars Alejandro and Joanna Ampil guessed that there might have been some "vintage" and "retro" appeal.

After winning being hailed Best Picture at the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival Gabi ng Parangal, the film is gradually gaining traction and drawing in crowds.

"Ang Larawan" opened on Christmas Day with 53 theaters, but was pulled from nearly half of those theaters by the next day. Now, they're showing in 56 theaters. — LA, GMA News
