Art in the Park 2018: Street food by Gaita Fores, kalimba music, and art of course

It's a decade and two for Art in the Park and it has transformed from a casual Sunday afternoon fair to a treasure hunt for the next big thing.

The increasingly 'grammable annual event attracts a variety of visitors with different goals, but for featured artists Tekla Tamoria and Jacob Lindo, it remains a perfect venue for emerging artists and a great avenue for experimentation for the more established ones.

Tamoria is somewhere between both. Although she's participated in group shows and has been working on developing a unique relationship with paper and fabrics, she's still preparing for her first solo show (which she has been working on for five years.)

Her near-delirious energy, evident during the press merienda for Art in the Park on Thursday, is transformed into obsessive focus when she starts working on her modular pieces. Tamoria will be attaching intricately made hives to a tree for an installation titled "Colony."

Tamoria is largely influenced by organic patterns and embraces the fact that the material she works with degrades. She thinks of it as ideas graduating and "kinuha na ulit siya ni Mother Nature."

As an artist, Tamoria is everything Art in the Park has been over the past 12 years: a bit manic, experimental, and carefree.

Lindo's work similarly represents the best in Art in the Park: Finding new in the familiar. Lindo is both a painter and a sculptor, but he is becoming known for his collages.

He meticulously cuts illustrations from old, used books and presents them in new, exciting ways.

It's this vibe that Trickie Lopa, one of the organizers of the fair, looks forward to every year. "It's my favorite," she told the press during the launch. She told GMA News Online that she enjoys planning Art in the Park because she knows exactly what to expect.

That's not to say it's stagnant. Just two years ago, a "featured chef" was added to fair. Perhaps it's change and exploring what's new that keeps visitors coming back.

This year, 59 galleries, independent art spaces and student groups will be participating in Art in the Park. The featured chef is Margarita Forés and while details are still being finalized, the organizers told the press that she might be adding her touch to street food.

Bea Lorenzo is scheduled to enthrall with her kalimba and jazz music will be playing throughout the fair.

Art in the Park continues to earmark a portion of all sales to the Museum Foundation of the Philippines and the price cap for the art works remain at P50,000. — LA, GMA News
