Glaiza De Castro named Best Actress at GEMS Hiyas ng Sining Awards for ‘Liway’

Kapuso actor Glaiza de Castro picked up another award this week, this time for her widely acclaimed performance as "Liway."

Glaiza will be receiving the Best Actress trophy at the 3rd GEMS Hiyas ng Sining Awards, besting Anne Curtis (“Buy Bust”), Bela Padilla  (“The Day After Valentine’s), Gina Pareno (“Hintayan ng Langit”), Gloria Romero (“Rainbow’s Sunset”), Iza Calzado (“Distance”), Judy Ann Santos  (“Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes”), Kathryn Bernardo  (“The Hows of Us”), Nadine Lustre  (“Never Not Love You”), Perla Bautista  (“Kung Paano Hinihintay ang Dapithapon”), and Sarah Geronimo (“Miss Granny”).

"Liway" is based on the relationship between Director Dakip "Kip" Oebanda and his mother Commander Liway, born Cecilia Flores-Oebanda. As a young boy, the director lived in a prison camp and his mother entertained him with stories of a diwata fighting the Marcos dictatorship.

In addition to Glaiza, "Liway" also went on to win 5. Natatanging Pelikulang Pangkarapatang- Pantao  (Special Award). Several GMA News and Public Affairs programs and personalities were also honored by GEMS.

GEMS (Guilds of Educators, Mentors, and Students) has been recognizing outstanding achievements in the fields of print, stage, radio, television, and film since 2017.

The awarding ceremony for the 3rd GEMS Hiyas ng Sining Awards will be held on March 21 at the Center for Performing Arts, De La Salle Santiago Zobel School. — AT, GMA News
