Richard Gomez explains meaning behind viral yellow painting: 'It shows lust, self pleasure and power'

Ormoc City Mayor and actor Richard Gomez showed some of his artworks at ManilArt 2019, an art fair that opened on October 9 and lasted until Sunday, October 13 at the SMX Convention Center in Taguig City.

And all through the event, one of his paintings, "OOOOHH," enjoyed viral status on the internet.

Netizen Jayvee Araneta posted a photo of the Mayor standing beside his work, and it unexpectedly blew up on social media.

In the caption he wrote, "Hello mga artist kong friends, kuha lang kayo malamig na beer jan sa ref, sisig pulutan tapos upo kayo sa tabi ko pag-usapan natin gawa ni Richard Gomez sa Manila art 2019."

"OOOOHH" features a yellow male sex organ painted over a black backdrop, and according to a PEP.ph report, it costs P196,000.

In a text interview with GMA News Online, Mayor Gomez said the painting was "self-explanatory. Given a deeper thought, it shows lust, self pleasure and power."

Mayor Gomez also shared that he has been painting since the '90s, "but I never kept all of them," he told GMA News Online.

It's a little known fact about Goma, but he's always had a knack for the arts, starting an art collection early in his acting career.

"I've been collecting works from painters since the '80s when I started working and earning money. Most of what I've bought are still with me up to now," he shared.

This is not the first time he displayed his artwork in public. In 2018, the Ormoc City mayor showcased his work at the Pinto Museum for a group show called "When Evening Comes" with fellow artists Ferdie Montemayor and Erwin Leaño.

He staged his first solo exhibit in the same venue in December 2017 called "Surface."

As of this writing, the post garnered more than 37,000 reactions and over 29,000 shares on Facebook. — LA, GMA News
