Google pays tribute to Pinay visual artist, Pacita Abad

Multinational technology company Google pays tribute to a second Filipino artist this month, this time the subject of a Google doodle is the late visual artist Pacita Abad.

The first Filipino was the King of Comedy, Dolphy or Rodolfo Quizon in real life.

An internationally renowned artist Pacita Abad, based on a website dedicated to her, is known for her "experimentation with colors and materials."

Born in Basco, Batanes, Abad's painting career spanned three decades.

A graduate of the University of the Philippines, she has also travelled to the United States for her graduate studies.

Based on the website named after her, she was able to hold over 60 solo exhibitions at museums and galleries in Asia, US, Europe, Africa, and Latin America.

Among her famous art pieces are socio-political portraits of people and city scenes in Manila, including "The Death of Ninoy," which she painted in 1983 after the assassination of Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. the father of the former President Benigno Aquino III.

She received several awards including the TOYM Award for Art in the Philippines in 1984, the D.C. Commission on the Arts Award in June 1989 and Pamana Ng Pilipino Award for outstanding achievement in the arts, given by the President of the Philippines, Manila, June 2000.

Abad passed away in December 2004 in Singapore. -- BAP, GMA News
