Yakult Litro and the Pinoy Doctor Who: Just another April Fools’ Day

(Updated 6:10 p.m.) The first day of April is the day that gullible people—and the media—should be extra-careful about what they read in the press. On April Fools' Day, jesters have license to play practical jokes and come up with the silliest stories, hoping for someone to fall into their trap. This year, local websites once again joined in the fun, and here are some of our favorites:

Filipino talent to replace One Direction's Zayn Malik

When In Manila posted an article saying that a Filipino singer is being considered to replace Malik, who suddenly left British boy band last week.

For this piece, the site said the information came from source who refused to be identified.

"It all started out as a plan to have a local singer sing Zayn’s lines during the concert. But then we remembered how the set-up for Arnel Pineda in Journey was hugely successful. We thought that it was a strategic idea to scout for talent here. You have Charice Pempengco, Arnel Pineda, Lea Salonga. I’ve never met a Filipino who doesn’t like to sing," When In Manila wrote.

Yakult available in one liter

The same site also said that the probiotic dairy product Yakult, which is only available in those tiny 80-mL plastic bottles we all grew up with, will now be available in one-liter bottles. The site did not say whether the Yakult Litro would also be available in packs.

GMA-7 to make a Pinoy version of Doctor Who

What's A Geek has a present for all Filipino Whovians on April Fools' Day: the long-running British sci-fi series "Doctor Who" is getting a Filipino version—and it will be starring Vic Sotto.

The site even "quoted" GMA-7 Chairman Felipe Gozon as saying, "It is an honor to make a local adaptation of this long-running TV show."

The site also said that GMA-7 aims to make the series as Pinoy as possible so some changes would be necessary: the TARDIS will be a blue bahay kubo, and the Doctor will be a descendant of Jose Rizal.

Google allows users to play Pac-Man on Maps

Apart from these local sites, Google is also having a field day on April 1. Although the main search engine did not create a doodle, like it usually does during special days, Google Maps lets the user play Pac-Man on this day of fun.

UK media joins in the fun

UK tabloid The Sun said that Simon Cowell's face will grace new, limited edition £5 notes, while The Guardian declared that the notoriously policially incorrect Jeremy Clarkson, recently sacked from "Top Gear", will now be "dedicating his time and financial resources to sustainable energy, road safety and forging mutual understanding and tolerance between people of different cultures and religions"—with the news site even going so far as featuring a "look-a-like" (who looks nothing like Clarkson) in a video

Starbucks offers delivery services in Manila

Starbucks will now deliver coffee and other beverages and a limited menu of pastries to its customer's doorstep for a minimum order of P300, according to Pepper.ph., which even created a fake ad and a fake deliver number for the "story".

ThinkGeek releases 'Hodor' GPS system

Every "Game of Thrones" fan knows Hodor's lines by heart, if only because he only ever has one: "Hodor." Now, ThinkGeek is exploring the possibility of a "Hodor" Travel Buddy GPS system.

In the supposed product video, ThinkGeek shows off the feature of the GPS system and how it could help any traveler...get frustrated while driving.

ThinkGeek also released a number of April Fools' Day offers, including a Game of Thrones version of Clue, a steam-powered gaming console, a do-it-yourself 360-degree selfie ring, and a collector's edition of Groot beer and Rocket Fuel energy shot.

John Green to release "new" book

The Australian publisher of "The Fault in our Stars" author John Green announced on Twitter that the best-selling writer is set to release a new book. The story would be about Augustus Waters and Caroline Mathers, who were the characters of Green's "The Fault in our Stars." Well...

Use the Force, Luke

Meanwhile, in Switzerland, CERN has confirmed that The Force is real. “The Force is what gives a particle physicist his powers,” said Ben Kenobi of the University of Mos Eisley, Tatooine. — Trisha Macas/BM, GMA News
