Cebu govt office staff learn sign language to improve service

Expect the Cebu provincial government to be friendlier to the hearing-impaired, after staff in two of its offices learned sign language in a course earlier this month.

The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office and the Provincial Governor’s Office extension office took the sign language classes with some community organizers.

"This is for them to serve their clients better especially the hearing-impaired and those who have difficulty in expressing themselves verbally," the provincial government said.

It added this initiative stemmed from the Persons with Disability Day earlier this month.

At the time, many of the personnel came in contact with many hearing-impaired and verbally-challenged persons in the crowd.

Conducting the classes for free is Liza Aldred of the Volunteer Services Overseas Bahaginan, a UK-based NGO.

So far, the provincial government said those who took the classes can express the alphabet, numbers and some basic greetings using their hands. — Joel Locsin/BM, GMA News
