Miss Universe Spain crowns its first transgender queen, Angela Ponce

For the first time in history, a transgender woman might be standing tall, representing her country on the Miss Universe stage.

Angela Ponce, representing Cadiz, was crowned Miss Universe Spain 2018 Friday, June 29.

She bested 19 other candidate and became the first transgender woman to win the Miss Universe Spain title.

Angela completed her transition in 2014 and competed in Miss World Spain 2015. She failed to snatch the crown, which eventually went to Mireia Lalaguna, but said in an interview with the Daily Mail that, "As far as I'm concerned I'm a winner."

The 67th Miss Universe pageant will be held later this year, with Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa crowning her successor. — Aya Tantiangco, GMA News
