Atom Araullo among 2022 Online Journalism Awards finalists

Atom Araullo is among the finalists of the 2022 Online Journalism Awards.

He was part of the team that was shortlisted for the story “Anatomy of Gold: The Journey of Hidilyn Diaz

,” which featured the weightlifter’s journey to the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medal. The article is also a data-driven deep dive on Philippine sports.

The story includes additional interviews by Voltaire Tupaz, research by Bong Santisteban and Elyzsa Olavydez, visualization by Czarina Bastasa, and illustrations by Jose Almuena and Zander Esteban.

The story, which was first published by Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism in collaboration with FYT Media, and later on GMA News Online, was the only finalist under the “Topical Reporting: Olympics and Paralympics Coverage, Small Newsroom” category.

According to the article, “exceptional talent, visionary leadership, and an audacious grassroots program” are among Diaz’s secrets to making a historic win for the country.

OJA is a prestigious award-giving body that has “honored excellence and innovation in digital journalism since 2000.” It will award 55 prizes across 23 categories this year.

Winners will be announced during Online News Association’s conference happening Sept. 21-24 in Los Angeles. Video streams will be available for attendees and non-attendees. – RC, GMA News
