Her daughter, award-winning GMA News reporter and documentary filmmaker  Kara David took to Instagram to bid her farewell.

"Paalam mommy...mahal na mahal kita. Salamat po sa inspirasyon, sa tapang, sa mga mahahalagang turo at higit sa lahat sa pagmamahal sa pamilya at sa bayan," David wrote.

"Sorry po sa aking mga naging pagkukulang. Mahal na mahal kita. Panginoon, Kayo na po ang bahala kay Mama," she continued.

Karina David passed away Tuesday at the Philippine Heart Center.

Prior to her appointment as chief of the CSC, she served as an undersecretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the chairperson of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).

She has also worked as a professor and was known for her work in several organizations advocating for the rights of women, children and the poor.

"Much of her life was spent serving the Filipino people in her work as professor, activist, community organizer, and public servant. She was a patriot in the true sense of the word," her family said in a statement.

"As a professional, she was the epitome of discipline, intelligence and integrity; as a wife, mother, and grandmother, she was the perfect example of patience, selflessness and unconditional love."

David is survived by her husband University of the Philippines (UP) professor emeritus Randy; their children Carlos Primo, Kara, Nadya, and Jika; and their grandchildren Julia, Jacinta, Xavier, Alonso, and Lila.

In lieu of flowers, her family has asked for prayer for the repose of her soul.
