Dr. Vicki Belo on raising Scarlet Snow: ‘Combine love and discipline’

Celebrity doctor Vicki Belo said that she and her husband Hayden Kho combine love and discipline in raising Scarlet Snow.

“For one, we’re disciplinarians. I learned that from Hayden. I wasn’t really but you shouldn’t keep giving in to your children. You have to teach them early on the values; you have to be strict,” Dr. Vicki told GMA News Online on Sunday in an interview at the exclusive advance screening of “The Lion King” hosted by the Belo-Khos.

Dr. Vicki said that at first, she wasn’t the disciplinarian type because she was afraid Scarlet would not love her as much.

“I was afraid she won’t love me but what I found out is she actually loved Hayden and me more once I started disciplining na. Kasi parang before that she treated me like nothing but when I started to put my foot down parang now she looks for me, so combine love and discipline,” she said.

“Discipline without love doesn’t work,” she added.

How they handle tantrums

Belo said Scarlet barely throws tantrums but when she does, “we call it right away. The one thing you shouldn’t do is let it get worse and worse.”

She added that she understands her daughter's moods when Scarlet gets tired.

“Like today it was very hard because she’s been here since 1, she’s been excited, she’s really tired, so when I look at her I don’t know what to do. Parang kawawa naman, she’s been working so hard saying hi to everyone. So [in] instances like that, normally I would call her out but then, we try to understand the situation,” she continued.

Dr. Vicki said parents should start disciplining children as early as 1 to 3 years old.

She also said that she and her husband believe in spanking as a way of discipline, but never use their hands to spank their child. Instead, she said, they use a "spanking rod" they got from a Christian church.

“It has a louder sound but it’s not so painful and they know already when that comes out,” she said.

Dr. Vicki also said she never scolds Scarlet in public and that she would always explain why, then end her lecture with a hug.

“I never scold them with other people. And of course after that you always tell them, explain why, hug them, so it always ends up on a positive note,” she said. — BM, GMA News
