Parenting answers to navigate the new normal

Parenting answers to navigate the new normal

Hats off to parents these days! They work from home, manage the family budget, plan and prepare everyday meals, maintain household cleanliness, and help the kids adapt to remote schooling - all of this while keeping the family safe from the virus. On top of that, they need to guide kids through the new changes brought by the pandemic. Children aren’t immune to stress, so it is important for them to know what is happening in the world today.

1. Be honest with your children

It starts with an honest conversation about the coronavirus. Questions like "Why can’t I go out to play? When can I see my friends and family members? Will I get sick too?" should be answered truthfully in a child-friendly manner. Parents must be calm during such discussions. Letting kids learn about the virus can protect them against it, too. This would help them understand the importance of social distancing and staying indoors for the time being.

2. Assure them that their feelings are valid

Let your children express their feelings and voice out their fears. Parents should acknowledge their feelings and let them know that it's normal to feel stressed at times. However, talks should always be reassuring. Playing, relaxing, or engaging in any family activity are good ways to end on a positive note.

3. Keep outside communication lines open

Staying connected with other loved ones can help children ease their anxieties. Scheduling regular video calls with relatives or setting up virtual playdates can give kids their much-needed social time. Parents can also find ways for children to safely socialize online, like signing up for art activities or playing social games. This will also help take the children's minds off the pandemic.

4. Don’t skip bonding time with the kids

The pandemic may have changed a lot of family routines, but these bonding activities can give kids a sense of normalcy. Having a flexible yet consistent schedule around the house is key. Creating time for play, studies, rest, and family can give everyone a new routine to follow. Routines are important for everyone, especially children, because it gives them a feeling of security knowing what comes next in their days.

Most importantly, parents are the ideal role models for children to learn safe and proper hygiene. The best way to keep kids from getting sick is teaching them regular handwashing. It must be explained to them that it is a way to protect themselves and others. According to the Department of Health, social distancing, and wearing masks are also among the best tools to prevent the spread of the virus. Learn more about it in the video below.

Parents play an important role in keeping children safe during this time. With the right habits and information, the first step to beating the pandemic can begin right at home.
