How to make your LDR work, according to Lovi Poe

By MARGARET CLAIRE LAYUG,GMA News

In the upcoming week-long drama “I Can See You: High Rise Lovers,” Lovi Poe and Tom Rodriguez play a married couple whose relationship turns sour after spending more time than usual together at home.

In real life, however, Lovi Poe is in a long-distance relationship or LDR with her LA-based boyfriend Montgomery Blencowe, and they’ve been able to make it work long before the lockdown.

Since many couples must be going through the same thing during the quarantine period, the Kapuso actress shared a few tips on how you can make your significant other feel special even from afar.

1. Communication is key.

When asked to share LDR advice during a virtual roundtable interview over Zoom, the first tip that came to Lovi’s mind was communication.

“S’yempre sa lahat namang relasyon importante ’yun,” she said.

2. Find “new normal” ways to spend time with each another.

If you can’t go to him and he can’t go to you, both of you can still “keep the fire burning” through virtual means like video calls and watch parties.

Lovi shared that she and Montgomery even found a way to enjoy a series “together” while he was away. “We were watching ‘Money Heist.’ Sabay kaming ‘One, two, three, play!’” she said.

3. Trust!

Less communication and not being able to spend as much time with one another as before could easily cause a person’s mind to wander and assume what their partners might be doing.

“Trust is very important din kasi syempre kailangan may tiwala kayo sa isa’t isa, lalo na pag malayo kayo sa isa’t isa,” Lovi reminded.

4. Respect each other’s space.

How many times have you heard about a relationship coming to end because one person didn’t give their significant other any “room to breathe?”

According to Lovi, giving each other some space is also important in a long-distance relationship.

5. Enjoy the little things.

With dates, dinners and romantic evenings off the table for the time being, Lovi said one of the best things to make an LDR work is for both parties to know how to enjoy the “little things.”

“You have to appreciate what your partner does for you and make sure you do something special, too, at the same time ... It’s a give and take situation,” she stressed. – Margaret Claire Layug/RC, GMA News
