Family of senior who died in community pantry not blaming anyone, didn’t know he was going

The family of the 67-year-old senior citizen who died while lining up at a community pantry in Quezon City said they were not blaming anyone for what happened.

According to Mariz Umali’s “24 Oras” report Friday, Rolando dela Cruz’s eldest child Jennifer Fosana said they did not know that her father was going to the pantry set up by actress Angel Locsin.

“’Di po nagpaalam. ’Di namin alam. ’Di namin pinapayagan kasi alam namin na ’pag ganyan instance maraming tao,” said Jennifer.

[He didn’t tell us. We didn’t know. We wouldn’t allow him because we know in instances like those there are many people].

“Wala naman po kaming sinisisi (we are not blaming anyone),” she added.

“Akala namin babalik pa siya. Bigla ’di na pala siya babalik.”

[We thought he was coming back. Suddenly, he won’t be coming back anymore.]

Jennifer said Angel had reached out to them, promised she would pay for everything, and gave her apologies.

On Friday, Rolando fainted and died while lining up at the community pantry organized by the actress in Barangay Holy Spirit.

Quezon City’s Task Force Disiplina said Rolando, a balut vendor, went to the venue and lined up past 2 in the morning.

As more and more people arrived at the pantry, Rolando passed out while waiting in line. He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival due to natural causes, said the Quezon City Police District.

According to barangay traffic enforcer Angelito Ybanez, Rolando was near the end of the line when his chest started to hurt. It was later found out that he had a heart disease.

Meanwhile, Angel expressed her grief over Rolando’s death. In a Facebook post, the actress said she had gone to the hospital and spoken with the man’s family.

“Habang buhay po ako hihingi ng patawad sa kanila (I will ask for their forgiveness for the rest of my life),” Angel said.

“I will prioritize helping the family and I will make it my responsibility to help them get through this,” she added.

She also said the incident was her fault, and that other community pantries should not be affected. – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
