Even in summer, there's time for afternoon tea

In the midst of the hot summer, it may make more sense to reach for that buko juice, sago't gulaman, mango shake, or ice-cold soda. But just as coffee drinkers can't break the coffee habit even on a hot day, tea drinkers must have their tea whatever the weather may be. Proof of this is the growing number of establishments offering afternoon tea in Metro Manila, along with the increasing number of tea salons and tea shops. “I think it's catching on,” said Margaux Hontiveros, communications coordinator of Makati Shangri-La Manila, when asked about the afternoon tea habit. “Other hotels are doing it.” With a view of the garden At the Lobby Lounge of Makati Shangri-La Manila on a recent weekday, for instance, the place was full. Women who were probably part of the ladies-who-lunch crowd were daintily holding their tea sandwiches while exchanging stories about their day. Men were conducting casual meetings while the 14-piece Maria S. Esteban Orchestra were playing standards and easy listening music, such as “Moon River” and “Kailan” (although they are known to break into a Katy Perry or One Direction number upon request).

And all these were happening in the spacious lobby with views of the garden, giving a relaxing ambience in the midst of the busy commercial district. “It's a very civilized way to spend the afternoon,” said Carina P. Galano, service manager of the Lobby Lounge. “You can have a view of the outside even when you're inside. We also do get a lot of meetings,” she said. Started six years ago, the afternoon tea service at the hotel starts at 3 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. seven days a week. Customers range in age from young twenty-somethings to senior citizens. Curiously, it's the young people who order more tea. “The older ones prefer coffee,” said Galano. And the place is almost always fully packed on weekends.

The afternoon tea sets offer a mix of Asian and Western items. The Classic set, which is based on the original British afternoon tea, has raisin and lemon scones (freshly baked without yeast) with clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam, and smoked salmon and roast beef finger sandwiches. The Filipino set has bibingka, vegetable okoy, beef caldereta empanada, and chicken adobo sandwich, among others. The Lobby Lounge Special, on the other hand, has foie gras sandwich—a winner, in my opinion—as well as smoked salmon croissant, lobster on ciabatta, and smoked turkey sandwich. All the tea sets (priced about P550 per set and up) come with Dilmah tea, and you can take your pick from black, black tea with flavor, green tea, herbal infusion, or oolong tea. There are also other teas that may be ordered by the pot, such as the Italian almond tea or the jasmine tea, which Galano said is highly popular, maybe because it is familiar to many of us dining in Chinese restaurants. Coffee drinkers may opt for Lavazza coffee. And should you prefer neither, there's thick hot chocolate, which is so comforting. German-Filipino Chef Dirk Fiedler said the classic and Filipino sets are very popular. At times they also offer special tea sets, like the upcoming one for Mother's Day, or the one they had last March for Easter. A break from shopping No doubt it's due to its location right across Greenbelt in Makati that New World Makati Hotel's The Lounge has been drawing in ladies who lunch or people killing time before dinner for its afternoon tea service. Since afternoon tea was offered in January this year, guests have been regularly coming in to lounge around and relax over tea, coffee, or even champagne.

“Ang mga Pinoy mahilig mag-chika-chika sa hapon as it falls within the normal merienda time. Here they can have time to catch up with friends in a hotel lobby with a nice ambience and a view of Greenbelt, while people watching,” said Nini Icban, director of communications of New World Makati Hotel. Paawan Engineer, the hotel's food and beverage director, admitted they get more women customers than men as the males are probably still holed up in their offices during the tea service from 2:30 to 5 p.m. “We offer quality over quantity here. It's not 'come-eat-go.' It's all about the experience. Instead of going to a friend's house, you can come here and have champagne, some tea while you have conversation, and pastries, sandwiches, scones, ice cream, and empanada too,” Engineer said. The Lounge gives off a relaxing vibe with its high glass windows and comfy sofas and cushions in jewel tones, nothing high-brow or intimidating at all about it. “Afternoon tea is catching up in Manila,” Icban said, something Engineer agreed with. “We've had amazing response. The feedback is unbelievable. People find that our cozy lounge goes well with afternoon tea,” Engineer said.

At New World Makati Hotel, they offer three afternoon tea sets: Chocolate, Strawberry, and Coffee. Each set offers a mix of sweet and savory items, from finger sandwiches (salmon, tuna, pastrami, cheese) and scones to empanadas, tartlets, cheesecake, and sorbet (calamansi, strawberry, ube) or ice cream made in-house. At P995 each set (with coffee or tea), guests find value for money since one set can be shared by two people. For those in the mood for champagne, the sets can be ordered at P1,795 apiece which comes with two glasses of Piper Heidsieck Champagne. Why champagne? “It's an option for those who want something more glamorous. It's something good to have toward the end of the day,” Icban said. The freshly brewed teas, such as the Moroccan mint and the oolong tea which we had, indeed go well with the sweet and savory snacks. Eat everything and you can forego dinner if you're like me, a light eater. “Tea is very light. You don't get full very fast,” said Icban. And that's just perfect on a hot summer day when you just want to slow down and take a break from the maddening heat, and while away the time in good company. — BM, GMA News Makati Shangri-La Manila is on Ayala Avenue corner Makati Avenue, Makati City.
