Staying away from pork? Here are a few healthy substitutes

Pork is a favorite of many Filipinos.

Apart from being tasty, it's also a rich source of protein, potassium and zinc.

But since having too much of anything is never a good idea — the price of pork also went up by as much as P100 this week — "Unang Hirit" invited a culinary expert to talk about healthier alternatives we can use in our cooking.

Of course, one of them is monggo which is also packed with protein and easy to find in the market.

"Importante rin kasi 'yung protein sa katawan natin," Chef Roseshell Suico explained.

"So kung, let's say, ayaw natin munang mag-pork, pwede tayo munang magluto ng rich in protein katulad ng munggo kasi may content siya na 18-20 percent ng protein," she added.

Suico would also suggest green leafy vegetables and other ingredients like mushroom and tofu that you can substitute for meat in some of your favorite dishes.

Watch the entire segment on UH where Suico shared an easy "Tofu Express" recipe, and asked hosts to try other no-meat dishes like mushroom bola-bola and special "tocino" made with processed wheat. — Margaret Claire Layug/LA, GMA News
