FDA airs concern over washable hair chalk sold online

Philippine health authorities on Friday aired concern over the safety of so-called washable hair chalk being sold online.

The Food and Drug Administration, in its Advisory 2013-018 dated July 11, noted the washable hair chalk has become a popular fad among teenagers.

“The FDA has not received any notification in conformance with the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive for Washable Hair Chalks from any cosmetic establishments,” FDA acting director-general Dr. Kenneth Hartigan-Go said.

Hartigan-Go explained such products may contain ingredients that “may cause allergies and adverse reaction on the scalp, head, eyes and skin.”

"The public is hereby advised to use only products approved by FDA to ensure the safety and quality of cosmetic products," Hartigan-Go added.

He said the hair chalk is rubbed onto strands of hair to change their color, after which a straightener iron is used.

The FDA head said the public can contact the agency via info@fda.gov.ph to report any adverse reaction caused by the use of the said product.

It also advised the public to use only cosmetic products certified safe by the FDA. —KG, GMA News
