Rocco Nacino explores the state of Pinoy health

Aside from being one of your favorite Kapuso stars and regularly training in mixed martial arts, you may be pleasantly surprised to know that Rocco Nacino is also a registered nurse. His medical know-how makes him the perfect choice to host different shows that aim to educate and expose Pinoys on how to be healthy and avoid common diseases. As he hosts the GMA News TV and Department of Health collaboration The Healthy Juan, a show that aims to educate Filipinos on different diseases and health practices, Rocco’s experiences have given him new perspectives on health and its importance.

Interviewing actress and model Solenn Heussaff, Rocco did not expect a celebrity of her stature to be plagued by depression. Perfection, being in the spotlight, childhood insecurities, and expectations are what Solenn opened up about, and how battling with her feelings everyday was a process. She revealed where her depression stemmed from and how she found the courage to seek help.

Rocco also visited one of the 15 Department of Health-established Drug Abuse and Treatment Centers in the country where he talked to residents and administrators at the facility. He found how the sense of family balanced with hard work and discipline is what makes the rehabilitation process important. Listen to first-hand accounts of progress and transformation to understand why you should look at the residents in a positive light and never give up on them as they try to change their lives for the better.

Finding out Gloria Diaz’s secrets to health and beauty was what Rocco uncovered when he tackled the issue of healthy aging. Viewers can take a hint or two from her on how to keep those Ms. Universe looks! Also, his fun encounter with a Novaliches senior citizen cycling club made him realize how staying active even in a person’s advanced age was important. They tell him their stories of how cycling has benefitted both their bodies and minds.

Part of immersing himself into the state of health of Filipinos, Rocco also learned about disabilities like blindness. He spent a day with a visually-impaired young girl Angel and actually experienced how difficult it was to be a blind competitive runner by trying out the sport while being “blind” himself. Rocco tells us the inspiring story of how she confronted her handicap and triumphed in sports and in life.

Rocco admits that being able to touch on his medical knowledge through this show is a great pleasure, knowing that he can contribute greatly with his personal insights based on his own knowledge and experience in the field, and he hopes that new learnings continually enrich the lives of viewers of the show. Future episodes of The Healthy Juan feature road safety, organ donation, dementia, autism, and more.
