Nail discoloration and fissures around them? You might have nail fungi

Nail fungi can be a nightmare for anyone who has it — nail discoloration, fissures around them, and all.

Also known as Onychomycosis, nail fungus is caused by an infection called  dermatophytes or yeasts, according to a recent episode of Pinoy MD.

Usually found on a person's toes, nail fungus is actually contagious and can be acquired through the environment and other people.

Dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez said, "Usually nakikita na nag-iiba 'yung color and minsan nasisira 'yung plate."

"Usually may infection doon sa nail bed," she added.

Experts say that the feet are usually more prone to have nail fungi since fungi prospers in dark and wet environments which is a state that feet are usually exposed to especially when coming from pools and bathrooms.

It is then advised to dry shoes and be more aware of wearing closed shoes if the feet will sweat easily since it can lead to nail fungi infection.

However, if nail fungi do appear in the toes or fingernails already, doctors say that there are available anti-fungal cream and anti-fungal medication that can effectively kill fungi.

However, if the person really wants to kill the fungi and at the same time bring back the nails to its original state before the infection, a laser treatment called Switched Nd: YAG laser is available.

During the treatment, the laser will produce heat that will hit the nail bed and kill the fungus. In order to have a successful removal, it is advised to have four laser treatment sessions once a week. — LA, GMA News
