Government workers and self-employed among the ‘most psychologically well’ in the PHL workforce, according to study

A recent study conducted by health maintenance organization PhilCare showed that Filipinos who work for the government or those who are self-employed are the most 'psychologically well', compared to the rest of the country’s employed population.

The study titled the 2nd PhilCare Wellness Index, considered the psychological well-being of 460 employed respondents. It claims to be the only nationwide study that measures the perceived health and wellness of Filipinos.

It followed a seven-point scale where respondents chose from the answers: “very good, good, somewhat good, neither good nor bad, somewhat bad, bad, and very bad.”

“Among the 460 employed respondents, government employees and those self-employed rated themselves as having “good” psychological wellness, with scores of 1.98 and 2.08, respectively,” the study reported.

Other employed Filipinos such as those in private corporations, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and non-government organizations (NGOs) scored 2.80, 3.02, and 2.87, respectively. This meant that they had a “somewhat good” level of psychological wellness.

In the study, lower scores meant better psychological wellness.

Some of the questions that were asked to respondents covered living a life of relevance, level of contentment and their perception of how others respected them.

Aside from evaluating psychological wellness, the study also measured physical, nutritional, medical, lifestyle, and financial well-being. The study also looked into sex, stress, vices, and health practices of Filipinos.

According to a press statement, PhilCare President and CEO Jaeger L. Tanco said the results of the survey were very useful in helping the health sector come up with programs that address the needs of Filipinos, which would, in turn, help them attain a better state of wellness.

“Our vision is to help promote a brand of health that is holistic and inclusive. The PhilCare Wellness Index gives us a clear picture on where we are when it comes to wellness and, more importantly, it charts a clear path on how far we can go to promote health among Filipinos,” he said. — Angelica Y.
