The first two transwomen flight attendants of the Philippines are here!

Not one, but two!

Cebu Pacific just accepted two transwomen flight attendants in the Philippines into their crew and they're about to set flight this weekend.

Mikee Vitug and Jess Labares both took to Facebook Tuesday to announce and  take pride of their achievement on becoming the first two transwomen flight attendants in the country.

Mikee, a former a pharmacist, said applying to become a flight attendant was just a random idea with her thinking it would be impossible in a conservative country.

She said it was her partner who pushed her to apply, telling her to "stop resisting because there's no harm in trying."

Those words motivated her to give it a try and prepare. Mikee read articles, watched videos and tutorials to help her make a good impact on her application.

Speaking to GMA News Online, Mikee said she really didn't expect to be accepted. "I know wala pang pumapasa na trans sa Philippines," she explained.

On Facebook, the 26-year-old Pampanga native narrated how nervous she was on interview day: "Hindi ako sure kung pasok ba height ko, complexion ko and smile ko sa standard nila, and hindi na ako nag expect pero pinag stay pa ako for an impact interview and sobrang nagulat ako na naka lagpas ako sa screening."

In a phone interview, Mikee shared how happy she was that Cebu Pacific  "welcomed me as me. Pagpasok ko pa lang sa office, they addressed me properly. They were so gracious! My experience with them was very ideal."

It was during her final interview that she learned another transwoman, Jess, was accepted.

"I know of Jess because she's an icon in the community. She just won a beauty pageant," Mikee told GMA News Online. "I was so happy to learn we're batchmates! I won't be alone in my experiences. Merong makaka-relate."

"Sobrang proud ako sa sarili ko na naka survive ako at eto na naka graduate na ako ng training at check ride masasabi ko na I am now officially a cabin crew!" she continued in her post.

Mikee said she is "honored and humbled" to be one of the first transwomen cabin crew in the Philippines, hoping it would "spark a change" on how people perceive transwomen.

"I feel honored and humbled that I am one of the first transwoman Cabin crew dito sa Philippines. This is something new and I hope it will spark a change sa kung paano ang pag tingin ng mga tao sa mga transwoman na hindi kami i box or i stereotype kasi tao din naman kami, capable din kami, normal lang din kami na tao," Mikee wrote.

It's exactly how Jess feels. In her Facebook post, the beauty queen said she is honored to make history as one of the first flight attendants in the Philippines, extending her gratitude to Cebgo and Cebu Pacific for accepting her and Mikee.

She then mentioned that this is a good thing for the whole LGBTQ community, "This means that we are now slowly accepting and respecting individuality, uniqueness and expression."

Jess continued, "It is another milestone in the country that shows that Cebu Pacific is diverse and multicultural company. This wouldn't be possible not because of the pillars, bosses and supervisors of the company."

She said she hopes that "this will be an inspiration not just to the LGBTQ community but to everyone who dreams and has goals in life to never give up on something you really want."

In an interview with GMA News Online, Charo Logarta Lagamon of Cebu Pacific's Corporate Communications said there was no specific program for the LGBTQ community and that Jess and Mikee were normal applicants who met the qualifications to be part of Cebgo's cabin crew team.

"There is no program. It's just that they are qualified," she said. — LA, GMA News
