Netizens answer child shelter's cry for help after running out of food supply amid quarantine

Two days after a shelter for abandoned and abused children ran out of food supply, netizens responded to their appeal for help amid the enhanced community quarantine

On Tuesday, Meritxell Children's World Foundation Inc. in Marikina City posted a photo of their empty refrigerator and freezer on Facebook.

On Thursday, their fridge is once again filled with vegetables and meat as help from numerous netizens came pouring in just a few hours after they posted on social media.

"I was teary-eyed many times because it was totally unprecedented," executive director Leah Lagmay said in a "24 Oras" report.

"There are so many good people in the Philippines, in the world. I really should have not been worried because I have been worrying about Meritxell," she added.

Fresh food supplies, enough to last them for two weeks, were delivered to the shelter which houses six houseparents and 15 children.

Lagmay said that the shelter heavily relies on donations but their supplies ran devastatingly low amid the quarantine.

The usual delivery person who would bring them food from the talipapa on a bicycle was also unable to go out due to the strict measures imposed by the government.

Lagmay couldn't help but feel extremely blessed with the outpour of support the shelter received from people in and out of the country.

She encouraged everyone to donate not only to Meritxell but also to other shelters in need amid the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). —Kaela Malig/MGP, GMA News
