‘LIGTAS-PADYAK’

‘Unang Hirit’ gives out 100 sets of safety gear to bikers in Parañaque

“Unang Hirit” has given away 100 sets of bike safety gear to riders along Ninoy Aquino Avenue in Sucat, Parañaque City, on Tuesday as part of its “Ligtas-Padyak” project.

Among the many cyclists who passed by Sucat this morning, one rider caught the UH team’s attention.

Alexander Lombos, 48, rides a rusty old bike for four hours from Trece Martires to Parañaque and back every day. He is no stranger to accidents, with some parts of his bike held together only by a rope and using only his foot as his brake.

Still, Lombos hits the road every day in order to support his family.

“Mahirap po talaga kasi minsan hindi ka makapag-hanapbuhay,” he says.

To help make his journey a little bit safer, “Unang Hirit” surprised him with not only a set of safety gear but with a brand new bike that he can call his own.

Many Filipinos like Mang Alexander have turned to biking as an alternative mode of transportation amid the limited public transportation during COVID-19 pandemic. Commuters are also bearing the brunt of limited public transportation due to the lockdown measures in the country.

To help cyclists reach their destinations safely, UH launched the “Ligtas-Padyak” project, where they gave away bike safety gear.

The bikes and the safety gear are donations from an anonymous Kapuso donor concerned about the safety of cyclists who brave the perilous journey on public roads. – Margaret Claire Layug/RC, GMA News
