94-year-old blind woman suddenly regains eyesight

A 94-year-old woman who has been blind for more than a decade has suddenly regained her eyesight.

In a “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho” episode, Lola Teting from Buruanga, Aklan, shared that she started to lose her vision in 2008, but regained it last July 23.

“Nanaginip ako na nakakakita na ako (I dreamt that I could see again),” Lola Teting said. “Mga dalawang araw, paggising ko, ay nakita ko na ang aking anak, tinawag ko, ‘Nakakakita na ako, ’ne’ (Two days later, when I woke up, I could see my daughter. I called her, ‘I can see’)!”

Her relatives also thought it was a miracle. Her daughter-in-law, Juana Dela Cruz, said Lola Teting could have regained her eyesight because of her faith in God.

According to Lola Teting, she lost her eyesight because of cataract. At first it was just in her left eye, but the following year, she lost vision in her right eye too.

Lola Teting said she felt afraid when she realized she couldn’t see anymore. It became worse when she started to lose hearing as well.

Since then, her grandchildren served as her eyes.

Milven, one of her grandchildren, said that she grew up with Lola Teting.

“Noong bata kami talagang ’pag pinapagalitan kasi kami ng parents ko, sa kanya talaga ako tumatakbo. ‘Yun na lang din ‘yung puwede naming iparamdam sa kanya na ngayon naman na siya din iyong nangangailangan (When I was younger and my parents would scold me, I’d always run to her. This is the least we can do for her now that she’s the one in need of help),” Milven added.

When Lola Teting’s eyesight started to worsen, she was supposed to undergo a laser eye surgery. However, when she was in the operating room, her blood pressure skyrocketed, so they had to stop the procedure.

Despite her loss of vision, Lola Teting said she would pray the rosary every day.

Then one day, she woke up and realized she could see again.

Everyone rejoiced when they heard of the news.

“Tumulo ‘yung luha ko kasi sa tagal na hindi nakakita si lola, ‘yun ‘yung first time niya na nakakita (It’s been so long since Lola Teting saw anything),” said Milven.

One of the first things Lola Teting did, she said, was look at herself in the mirror. She even took a selfie with Milven!

According to ophthalmologist Dr. Jason Inocencio, Lola Teting’s case was rare.

After the online consultation with Lola Teting, Dr. Inocencio said she might not yet be totally safe from blindness.

According to the doctor, it is normal for old people to be affected by cataract. In Lola Teting’s case, the affliction may have just transferred to another part of her eyes.

He said this may cause other complications that could lead to blindness. He advised Lola Teting to undergo a physical checkup.

Despite the information from the doctor, Lola Teting still felt grateful for getting her vision back.

To take advantage of her newly regained vision, she video called with her daughter who was based in Canada.

She was surprised to see her daughter Regina again, and couldn’t believe how the once young girl had white hair now.

“Wala talagang imposible kapag manalangin ka. Huwag natin gawing biro ang ating buhay. Mamuhay nang husto kahit na mahirap tayo (There’s really nothing impossible when you have faith. Let’s make the most out of our lives. Let’s live righteously even if we’re poor),” said Lola Teting. – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News
