Here are a couple ways to properly disinfect your face shields

Face shields have become a necessity among Filipinos amid the COVID-19 pandemic, especially now that it has become mandatory to wear them in public transportation.

But before wearing one, make sure to properly disinfect and clean the mask; it's gone through several processes before actually getting to you.

In a report on Unang Hirit, Lyn Ching and Suzi Abrera showed two ways you can disinfect your face shields.

Use alcohol spray and cloth/tissue

Since the material of the shield is made of plastic, it is suggested that you put on gloves before washing them. Fingerprints stay on the surface, after all.

Spray alcohol on both the inner part and out part of the shield, and make sure you also disinfect the straps.

Once you soak your shield with alcohol, you can use a clean tissue or cloth to pat the face shield dry before use.

Use warm water and soap

If you have more time and access to other cleaning tools, feel free use warm water and soap. Have two basins ready: one for washing and the other for rinsing.

In the first basin, mix warm water and detergent or anti-bacterial soap and soak the mask for about 3-5 minutes. Lightly scrub it with a sponge.

After washing it with soap, rinse it using warm water. Make sure you're not using hot water — that can cause your face shield to be damaged or deformed due to its plastic material.

Once you're done rinsing, lightly pat it with a clean towel or cloth.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) last week released a Memorandum Circular which mandates the use of face shields, aside from wearing face masks, in any mode of public transportation service effective August 15, 2020. — Jannielyn Ann Bigtas/LA, GMA News
