Unequal distribution of house work affects women's mental health, expert says

Unfair distribution of house work affects women's mental health, Dr. Gia Sison said during TELUS International Philippines and Messy Bessy's conference for Women's Month on Tuesday.

Among the factors that affect women's mental health are the unfair distribution of care work at home as well as the sudden increase of parenting demands amid the pandemic.

"Inequality will always lead to negative stress and that encompasses everything, be it personal life, social life, and everything the person is," Sison said.

She added, "Shared responsibility is encouraged and again, know when to set your boundaries."

Aside from inequality at home, Sison also shared that negative life events such as workplace harassment, and partner abuses, as well as gender-based economic imbalance can also affect women's mental health.

Sison said, "Early intervention is really encouraged. Let's not wait for the time that it's really bad."
